Essential Features Every Business Website Should Have

Most business websites are missing three or four unglamorous features that would drive more enquiries than any redesign would.

When I audit a business website that isn't converting, it is rarely because the design looks dated. The essential business website features that actually move the needle are unglamorous, and most sites are missing at least half of them. A site can look sharp and still fail to turn a visitor into an enquiry because of something as small as a phone number that isn't tappable.

The features that actually earn enquiries

Start with speed. If your homepage takes more than three seconds to load on a mid-range Android phone over 4G — not office wifi — you are losing visitors before they see anything. Then look at your phone number and WhatsApp link: both need to be tap-to-act, sitting in the same spot on every page, not buried in a footer under six other links. A visitor deciding whether to reach out should not have to hunt.

  • Fast load time on real mobile networks, not just office wifi
  • Tap-to-call and tap-to-WhatsApp buttons visible on every page, not just Contact
  • Clear service or product pages with real photos, not stock imagery
  • A simple enquiry form with as few fields as the business genuinely needs
  • Basic proof — project photos, years running, real numbers — near the top, not buried

Mobile tap targets are where most sites fail quietly

Nearly every small business site we take over has buttons and links sized for a mouse cursor, not a thumb. A 30px button with 4px of spacing around it looks fine on a designer's laptop and is genuinely hard to tap accurately on a phone, especially for an older customer or someone in a hurry. Google's own guidance suggests tap targets should be roughly 44px with clear spacing, and it is one of the cheapest fixes available with the biggest real-world impact on form completions and WhatsApp clicks.

Proof beats polish

A visitor deciding whether to trust a business is looking for evidence, not adjectives. Real project photos, an honest count of work done — we mention our 50+ logos and 200+ visiting card designs on our own site for exactly this reason — and a location a customer can actually find on a map do more for conversion than a hero animation ever will. If your homepage leads with a slogan and no evidence, a sceptical visitor leaves before scrolling to find the proof further down.

A visitor doesn't need to be impressed. They need to be convinced fast enough to still be on the page.

The honest caveat here: not every feature on this list applies to every business. A single-location shop does not need a blog, and a service consultant does not need a product filter system. Adding features nobody uses is its own kind of bloat — it slows the site down and gives a visitor more places to get distracted before they act. Build for how your actual customers reach you, not for a checklist.
